Situated on the Mississippi in northern Illinois, Nauvoo achieved prominence as a major historic settlement for the Latter-Day Saints.  Although their stay was just seven years (1839 – 1846), the Saints built a Temple and many structures, and Nauvoo attracts thousands of visitors each year.  In conjunction with McGuire-Igleski Architects who renovated existing homes to their 1840s timeframe, CYLA was asked to create landscape context around the period dwellings.  In order to provide fencing, plantings, alleys, and walks, CYLA sought out articles, books and a previous Master Plan to substantiate design choices.  Landscape enhancement occurred around existing buildings as well as large grassy tracts that may or may not be subdivided in the future.   The resulting landscape improvements allow for more detailed interpretation and nuance for visitors who visit primarily in the summer.   (Ongoing through 2020.)
