UIC The Memorial Grove Renovation

This green space has been part of the East Side since the 1960’s. Large trees shade the lawns and the open lawns beckon students, however, it had become an under-used amenity largely cut off from normal circulation surrounded by fence. CYLA created a plan to open the space to the Taylor street commercial corridor and introduce a new circulation through the park-like space to connect with the main quad pathways. New walkways and paths, plazas and seating featuring permeable paving, re-use of granite benches and new seating are arranged to feature the beautiful mature trees and open green of the site. A major bike parking hub will be added under the adjacent SEO building. New LED fixtures are retrofitted in existing campus-standard fixtures. Many new plantings, trees and ornamental replenish the diversity of the site and enhance the enclosure.
