Austin Gardens, an historic green space within the Park District of Oak Park’s park system, became the site of a new Environmental Education Center and Learning Garden.  As prime on the project, CYLA oversaw location, design, and construction for the Center and was responsible for the circulation and gardens outside the center.  To maximize existing green space, the Center was located at the south end of the park and linked to existing pathways.  Spaces were provided for outdoor learning and exploration,  and in keeping with the Center’s commitment to environmental responsibility, geothermal, solar, and a green roof were installed.  A rain garden and bioswale absorb stormwater and a cistern collects rainwater from the roof.  The learning garden, which is bordered by a gravel path, showcases native and adapted plants appropriate for home gardens and good for pollinators.  The Center was awarded LEED Gold.  (With TBDA Architects and WMA Engineering)
